چکیده

GPRS extends the widely deployed GSM system with a more efficient wireless Internet access. In this paper we investigate how a TCP transmission over GPRS is affected when it loses all its resources due to preemption by circuit-switched calls with higher priority. The results indicate that TCP performance is degraded more than necessary, as buffered data is flushed immediately when the GPRS traffic is preempted. The time required for error recovery is considerable also for very short preemption periods. The situation would improve if data was buffered during preemption and if the data was transmitted immediately as GPRS resources become available

On Finite Queue with Two Types of Failures and Preemptive Priority (RESEARCH NOTE)

We study the single server queueing system with two types of Abstract failure to servicechannels including the preemptive priority to the repair of major failure. The units arrive at thesystem in a poisson fashion and are served exponenitally. The steady - state probabilities ofvarious states by using generating function have been obtained.

Analyzing Packet Delay Across A GSM/GPRS Network

In this paper we study two major sources of packets delay in the GSM/GPRS wireless network, at Base Station and at GGSN node. Fisrt, for the former one, we present an analytical model to study the performance of channel sharing schemes to support both circuit switched voice and packet data services in a GSM/GPRS network. We study three channel sharing schemes: 1) fixed sharing in which cell cha...

A Non-Preemptive Two-Class M/M/1 System with Prioritized Real-Time Jobs under Earliest-Deadline-First Policy

This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performance of a two-class priority M/M/1 system. The system is fully non-preemptive. More specifically, the prioritized class-1 jobs are real-time and served with the non-preemptive earliest-deadline-first (EDF) policy, but despite their priority cannot preempt any non real-time class-2 job. The waiting class-2 jobs can only be s...

Impact of GPRS buffering on TCP performance - Electronics Letters

Introduction: The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packetoriented extension to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) that supplies higher data rates and sharing of radio resources. The performance of the Internet protocols in GPRS is dependent not only on the quality of the radio link, but also on buffering in the GPRS network. According to [1–3], the over-sized network buff...

WWW performance over GPRS

In this paper, we present investigative results of HTTP performance over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Following on from an earlier study of GPRS[2], in which we uncovered a number of performance problems with TCP (e.g. sub-optimal start-up performance, excess queueing, spurious timeouts etc.), we discuss how and to what extent these limitations can impact HTTP. We also examine some othe...
